Grants starting 2009

• Scientia Professor Richard Bryant et al. received an ARC Linkage Grant for $1,021,140 over 5 years, the largest single grant to UNSW. The project is aimed at "Enhancing Mental Health in Aboriginal Children".

• Professor Gary Housley received an ARC Linkage Grant for $354,000 over 4 years for a project on "Gene Therapy to Enhance Auditory Prosthesis Performance for Cochlear Implants".

• Scientia Professor Richard Bryant and Scientia Professor Perminder Sachdev renewal of NHMRC Program Grants. * Richard Bryant (School of Psychology) and Derrick Silove (School of Psychiatry) will receive $7.06 million over 5 years for "Post-traumatic Mental Health: Advancing Understanding of Diagnosis, Treatment and Mechanisms". * Perminder Sachdev, Henry Brodaty and Gavin Andrews (School of Psychiatry) will receive $6.09 million over 5 years for "Prevention, Early Detection and Effective Management of Neurocognitive Disorders in the Elderly".

• Scientia Professor George Paxinos awarded a NHMRC Australia Fellowship. The $4 million grant that accompanies the Fellowship will be used to develop brain atlases, incl. the cortex, to inform treatment for major neurological diseases.

• Scientia Professor Perminder Sachdev received a $2.4 million NHMRC Capacity Building Grant. Funds will be used to research neuropsychiatric issues facing Australia's ageing population.

• NHMRC Project and Development Grants, ARC Discovery Project Grants, and ARC Linkage Grants 2009 - 51 NHMRC Project and Development Grants with more than $23 million were granted to UNSW of which 23 projects (45%) with $9,191,589 (about 40%) were awarded to brain sciences researchers. 78 ARC Discovery Project Grants with more than $27 million were granted to UNSW of which 12 projects (15%) with $3,666,000 (about 14%) were awarded to brain sciences researchers.

• Lucette Cysique who came to UNSW from the University of California, San Diego, as a Brain Sciences UNSW Postdoctoral Fellow, has success with obtaining a NHMRC Project Grant for 2009 so early in her research career.

Awards

• Scientia Professor Richard Bryant received the 2008 Australian Psychological Society Award for Distinguished Contribution to Science. Richard Bryant is a leading authority on post-traumatic stress disorder.

• Rebecca McKetin and Pall Thordarson, were awarded Tall Poppy Science Awards, 2008. A total of five awards went to UNSW researchers of whom two were brain sciences researchers.
