Milestones and Achievements


  • Brain Sciences UNSW officially launched by Vice Chancellor, Professor Mark Wainwright, on 15 March 2005 during Brain Awareness Week.
  • First NewSouth Global cross-faculty Chair awarded to Professor Caroline (Lindy) Rae under auspices of Brain Sciences UNSW. Appointed in March 2005 with across appointments to the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science (Chemistry).
  • Macquarie Group Foundation Chair of Schizophrenia Research awarded to UNSW and the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute (POWMRI) under the auspices of Brain Sciences UNSW in July 2005. Awarded by the Neuroscience Institute of Schizophrenia and Allied Disorders (NISAD); the Chair provides for a specialist in developmental neurobiology. Professor Cynthia (Cyndi) Shannon-Weickert commenced the position in November 2006.
  • Inaugural Brain Sciences UNSW Symposium, 6 April 06. Held at the Galleria in The Scientia at UNSW. 102 registrants; 17 oral speakers and a dedicated poster session with 26 posters from postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Opening address by Prof Mark Wainwright, Vice-Chancellor UNSW.
  • Brain Sciences UNSW awarded $4 million from NSW Government for mental health research and initiatives, 11 May 2006.
  • ARC – NHMRC Thinking Systems Research Project grant. Optimizing autonomous system control with brain-like hierarchical control systems. Breakspear et al. (School of Psychiatry). One of three nationally. $3.3 million (over 5 years). Awarded in July 2006.
  • Appointment of Brain Sciences UNSW Postdoctoral Fellows: Eryn Werry and Lucette Cysique; and Brain Sciences UNSW PhD Scholars: Stewart Heitmann, Jingjing Zheng, Benjamin Cheah, Emma Campbell-Smith and Genevra Hart, February 2008.
  • Professor John Hodges, Professor of Cognitive Neurology at the University of New South Wales, and world leader in dementia research, was awarded a Federation Fellowship from the Australian Research Council, 2008.
  • Establishment of the National Cannabis Prevention and Intervention Centre (NPIC). $12 million (over 4 years) from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing awarded to Professor Richard Mattick, 2008.
